Education in Action at Dollywood

We love to visit Dollywood to take a break from our routine AND learn outside our homeschool classroom. Did you know that Dollywood takes education at the park a step further by providing curriculum you can use before and during your visit? Check out the educational resources available to families in this overview video:

My kids enjoy science in action. During our recent visit, we set out to conduct a few experiments from the Science in the Park materials for several of our favorite Dollywood roller coasters. First up, Wild Eagle!

My son enjoyed exploring speed and velocity of Wild Eagle as well as timing the drops of Thunderhead on a stop watch!

The curriculum is well designed with teacher instructions, student questions and additional experiments. As a homeschool teacher, I love any opportunity for hands-on learning to reinforce concepts we’re learning at home – especially in a fun environment like Dollywood!

Insider Tip

Review the curriculum ahead of time to make the most of your visit. Working through all of the materials would take multiple days (or visits) so plan ahead. We even packed clipboards to make note-taking a cinch!

The curriculum provides tools for a wide-range of ages. Check out TVA’s resources for fun ways of exploring the water wheel’s alternative power sources or for a deeper dive into kinetic energy with Dollywood’s many roller coasters.

If you love nature, don’t miss the Wings of America show. Did you know that more than 175 bald eagles have been rehabilitated and released into the Great Smoky Mountains through Dollywood’s partnership with the American Eagle Foundation?! My kids enjoyed watching the live show and following up with curriculum worksheets.

Insider Tip

Plan for an up-close bald eagle encounter at the close of the Wings of America show as well as a personal photo opportunity available for any donation made to support the American Eagle Foundation!

Be sure to take a leisurely stroll through Craftsman’s Valley for lots of other activities from candle making to panning for gold. Hand-dipping candles and glass-blown ornaments remain my children’ favorite crafting activities on the park.

Insider Tip

For a fun at-home project, grab a copy of the American Kestrel Screech Owl Nest Box Plans from the wall to the right of the Wings of American stage. These make great weekend family projects!

If you’re looking for the perfect field trip or day of hands-on learning, check out Dollywood’s educational resources before planning your visit, and don’t forget to take lots of pictures of your fun-filled day!
