A Single Parent’s Guide to Dollywood

Whether single parenting is your full-time arrangement, or just a temporary gig due to your spouse’s schedule, Dollywood is an awesome experience for you and your child! As a single parent of two children, I have learned a few tricks along the way to make solo adventuring at Dollywood possible (and incredibly fun!).

3 Tips for Adventuring Dollywood as a Single Parent:

1. First things first, bathrooms.

One of the most important concerns you can have as a single parent is taking your child into a public restroom. I have a son and a daughter—that can get tricky! Dollywood has multiple family restrooms located throughout the park, which allow flexibility for one or more individuals (i.e. family members) of the same or opposite sex to use the bathroom. As a single mom to a son, these bathrooms are extremely helpful and one less thing to worry about.

2. Put yourself in time out!

No worries, you’re not in trouble here. This kind of time out means you get some time to rest, too. Single parenting can sometimes feel like you are constantly “in charge” of entertaining your child. But at Dollywood, special play areas like Hidden Hollow, Lil’ Pilots Playground and Firehouse Fun Yard allow your kids to interact with other children while you supervise from the sidelines (and rest those feet a little while, too!)

3. Keep it simple.

As a single parent, I love the convenience of staying at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa. There are so many activities on the property: we can swim, eat, play video games and hear a bedtime story all in one gorgeous spot. Staying at the resort allows us to dart from activity to activity without the hassle of traffic, parking and paying entry fees to different venues. All our family entertainment is right outside our room—and my kids love sleeping in the bunk beds, which means I get a bed to myself! Glorious!

Traveling as the sole parent can be an awesome and empowering experience. You can get to know your child (or children) in an entirely different light when you are having adventures outside your normal routine. Dollywood is designed to keep families together—so there are a variety of attractions in all areas. We don’t have to split up. It may seem intimidating at first, but you’ll find that Dollywood and Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort make it an adventure that’s easy to navigate for families of all shapes and sizes!
