My 12-year-old twins had been excited for weeks. We had planned a trip to Dollywood for the weekend of May 13 to celebrate their birthday. As we got closer to the day, Dollywood announced that Big Bear Mountain would be opening that weekend. These guys are an incredible musical group, having won numerous national awards and are as personable as they are talented. There's nothing like the Christmas season at Dollywood. Every year, I'm drawn back to the Smoky Mountain Christmas festival. It's so tastefully put together with Christmas lights galore (more than 6 million), heartfelt theater performances and melodious Christmas songs trailing through the park. It really puts me in the Christmas spirit. Last year, I realized Dollywood changed my view of Santa Claus: to me it seems the park portrays Santa Claus as an embodiment of the Christmas spirit of kindness and generosity. I challenge you to look for and embody that spirit, too. Be more like Santa Claus.

While I love Dollywood's Flower & Food Festival and Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration, there is something super special about the seasonal showcase of holidays at Dollywood from late September with Harvest Festival featuring Great Pumpkin LumiNights to the Christmas spectacular that is Dollywood's Smoky Mountain Christmas. The lights seem brighter, the smells of holiday treats are stronger, and the air is definitely crisper.

I ran my first 5k at Dollywood! That's right. Dollywood hosts an annual race called Light the Way 5k. I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I knew that it was scheduled late at night after the park closed so participants could enjoy an empty park glowing with millions of Christmas lights. I finally mustered up enough courage to ride Mystery Mine at Dollywood. “Can I bring my stroller to Dollywood?” asks every parent ever. YES! Dollywood has zero stroller sizing rules! You can bring your stroller or wagon to the park, no questions asked. If you need a stroller or wagon to make it through a day at the theme park (or water park!) then please bring it. If you plan to ride the tram from the parking lot to the gate, your stroller will have to be folded and held in the seat with you, so I recommend bringing something easily transportable.

Everyone is always talking about the Cinnamon Bread at Dollywood, and yes, it is quite great, but another treat that may sometimes be overlooked is the amazing Kettle Corn. “Oh, I’ve had kettle corn before,” I’ve heard people say. They are talking about the stuff at fairs and festivals, but Dollywood’s Kettle Corn is in a class of its own. It’s not even comparable.

Dollywood has been thrilling guests for 37 seasons. As you stroll around the park, you may have noticed themed signs that look like advertisements. They are not actually advertisements at all, they serve a special purpose. During Dollywood’s 30th season, a new tradition began. My drive to Dollywood is about an hour one way. In that time, my daughter Di’Avion and I determine our plan for the day. Inevitably, that plan, of course, includes yummy goodies at Dollywood! This is by far my favorite park topic. I love thinking about what toppings I will have on my funnel cake and when I should get it. The best insider tip we received was from Dolly Parton’s Stampede’s MC, Jay Teter. He’s been with the show for 25 years and still can’t get enough of the food! His secret: dip EVERYTHING in the soup! It’s the Dollywood off-season, and I am missing the park! The sights, the sounds, the rides, the shows, the shopping—and you guessed it, the cinnamon bread. This iconic treat is a must-have when you visit the Smokies, and my family loves it. So, I decided to try to make it at home. Now that the hustle and bustle of the always-busy holiday season is over, people just want to take a moment to recharge. (I know I do!). The Spa at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort is a true hidden gem for locals. One thing many people don’t realize is that you do not have to be staying as a guest to utilize The Spa! As a photographer, bright colors and details always catch my eye. One of the places I love to photograph (and browse!) while visiting Dollywood is the Sweet Shoppe Candy Kitchen. Located between Showstreet Ice Cream and the Southern Pantry, the Candy Kitchen produces enough sweet treats to feed an army every day! Is there something you keep in your Dollywood bag for every trip? Mine would be a copy of the 1982 park map for Silver Dollar City, Tennessee. I love historical things like that.
